History:
Ludhiana city was initially just a small village called Meer Hota and was ruled by Yodhas from 1st to 4th century. It subsequently came under King Samudragupta and the Rajputs. The original Ludhianavis actually settled here much later in the 9th century. And then the Punjabi races of Sidhus, Gills, Sandhus and Grewals came from the jungle of Jagraon.
Ludhiana city was founded in the time of Lodhi dynasty which ruled in Delhi from 1451-1526 A.D. The legend goes that Yusaf Khan and Nihand Khan two Lodhi Chief were deputed by Sikandar Lodhi (1489-1517 A.D.) to restore order in this region. They camped at the site of present city of Ludhiana. Yusaf Khan went across the river Sutlej in Jalandhar Doab to check Khokhars who were plundering the Doab and made a settlement at Sultanpur while Nihand Khan stayed back and founded the present city at the site of village Meer Hota. The new town was originally known as Lodhi-ana, which means the town of Lodi's. The name later changed to the present name Ludhiana.
In the early 19th century, it has been under the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1806) for a short period. During that time, it became an important British cantonment in 1809. They confined the Maharaja's control to the right bank of the River Sutlej and the British troops were permanently stationed in Ludhiana.
